University of Twente Scholarship (UTS): Excellence Awards for International Master’s Students

The University of Twente Scholarship (UTS) offers exceptional financial support to outstanding non-EU/EEA students pursuing graduate studies in the Netherlands. This prestigious scholarship recognizes academic excellence and provides recipients with exclusive opportunities for advanced learning and leadership development.

About the Scholarship

The University of Twente Scholarship is designed for excellent international students applying for Master’s (MSc) programs at the University of Twente. Recipients become part of an elite cohort of the most promising UT students, with exclusive access to one of three distinguished honours programs: Research Honours, Design Honours, or Change Leaders.

Scholarship Value and Coverage

The UTS provides financial support ranging from €3,000 to €22,000 for one year of study. This scholarship serves as compensation for study-related costs, with recipients having full discretion over how to allocate the funds. The university does not pay expenses such as tuition fees directly on behalf of scholarship holders.

Applicants should review the estimated costs of living at the University of Twente (excluding tuition fees) to ensure the scholarship amount aligns with their financial needs. The scholarship is not a full scholarship, and candidates must be certain they can cover remaining costs beyond the scholarship amount.

Two-Year Program Support

For students enrolled in two-year Master’s programs, the UTS can be extended into the second year with an amount equal to the first-year scholarship. However, continuation is contingent upon meeting specific performance requirements by the end of the third quartile of the first year:

  • Achieve an average grade of 7 out of 10
  • Complete at least 50% of European Credits (ECTS)

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

UTS recipients applying for programs starting in September 2026 may be eligible for the Kipaji Scholarship, an additional funding opportunity. Interested candidates should indicate their interest in the application motivation and review the specific Kipaji Scholarship requirements, as this program has additional eligibility criteria beyond the standard UTS requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the University of Twente Scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following conditions:

Academic Requirements:

  • Receive (provisional) admission to a qualifying UT Master’s program starting in academic year 2026/2027 (September)
  • Possess a student number from the university
  • Rank among the top 5-10% of graduates from their home university
  • Not have graduated from a UT undergraduate or graduate program previously

Language Requirements:

  • Meet general English language requirements with Academic IELTS 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT 90)
  • Achieve minimum subscore of 6.0 (TOEFL iBT 20) in speaking skills

Residency and Nationality Requirements:

  • Be a non-EU/EEA national
  • Comply with conditions for obtaining an entry visa to the Netherlands (if applicable)
  • Not be eligible for a Dutch study loan
  • Not pay statutory tuition fees (which typically apply to EU/EEA students)

Important Exclusions:

The UTS is not available for:

  • Dutch nationals or current UT students
  • EU/EEA students
  • Master’s programs at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)
  • Pre-Master programs (pre-Master students cannot apply for UTS when continuing to a Master’s program)
  • Students eligible for statutory tuition fees due to Dutch residence permits

If a UTS recipient becomes eligible for statutory tuition fees during their studies, they must immediately inform the UT Scholarship Coordinator. In such cases, the scholarship will be cancelled and payments discontinued.

Application Process

The application for the University of Twente Scholarship is separate from the application for course entry. Regardless of funding status, candidates must first secure academic admission to a qualifying Master’s program. After submitting an admission application, results may take up to eight weeks.

Once applicants receive a conditional or full admission letter and obtain a student number, they may proceed with the scholarship application.
