UN Tourism Social Innovation Challenge

Empowering Sustainable, Inclusive, and Green Solutions for Social Impact

Introduction

Tourism remains a cornerstone of global economic growth, contributing 10.4% to global GDP and providing 319 million jobs in 2023 alone—representing 10% of total worldwide employment. With an annual economic output of over USD 9 trillion, the sector’s footprint is undeniable. Yet, as the world grapples with climate change, shifting social dynamics, and the need for more equitable development, tourism must evolve.

The UN Tourism Social Innovation Challenge seeks to identify and support groundbreaking startups, scaleups, and entrepreneurs driving solutions in Community-based Tourism, Inclusivity & Accessibility, and Green Projects. By empowering sustainable practices, advancing inclusivity, and strengthening community engagement, this challenge aims to transform tourism into a driver of economic opportunity, social equity, and environmental resilience.
