The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of International Affairs (IA) is now accepting applications for its highly competitive Junior Fellowship Program for the 2025–2027 cycle. This two-year program offers recent college graduates an unparalleled opportunity to shape international economic policy and gain hands-on experience at the forefront of global finance and diplomacy.

The Junior Fellowship program is designed for outstanding, motivated graduates eager to contribute to U.S. engagement in international financial and economic issues while building skills that can lead to future opportunities in government, academia, or the private sector.


About the Junior Fellowship Program

The International Affairs Junior Fellowship is a two-year, fixed-term program. Each year, up to 30 fellows are selected to join Treasury’s Office of International Affairs, working alongside senior officials on critical issues that shape U.S. economic engagement worldwide.

Key Features of the Program:

  • Duration: 2 years (2025–2027)

  • Placement: Fellows are assigned to either regional or functional offices

  • Compensation: Fellows are hired at the GS-9 level and receive full Treasury benefits

  • Career Development: Fellows leave the program well-prepared for careers in the U.S. government, private sector, or graduate-level study


What Fellows Do

Junior Fellows gain broad exposure to pressing international economic and financial policy issues. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing policy proposals to address global financial and economic challenges.

  • Analyzing international economic and financial developments, including trends that affect the U.S. economy.

  • Conducting detailed analytical studies to support Treasury decision-making.

  • Supporting bilateral and multilateral meetings for senior Treasury officials engaging with international counterparts at the:

    • International Monetary Fund (IMF)

    • World Bank

    • Group of Seven (G7)

    • Group of Twenty (G20)

  • Travel opportunities: Junior Fellows may travel abroad as part of official U.S. delegations.

  • Exposure to senior-level engagement: Fellows frequently participate in high-level meetings and dialogues.


Placement Areas

Fellows will work in either a regional office or a functional office:

  • Regional Offices: Oversee Treasury’s engagement with finance ministries and treasuries across specific global regions.

  • Functional Offices: Coordinate Treasury’s work with international financial institutions and develop policies on cross-cutting issues such as:

    • Climate change

    • Export credits

    • Foreign exchange

    • Global economic resilience


Qualifications

The Treasury seeks candidates with strong academic backgrounds and demonstrated interest in international economics and policy.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (recent or expected by 2025) in economics, international relations, public policy, finance, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated interest in international economic policy and public service.

  • U.S. citizenship (must provide documentation).

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a national security clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong analytical and research skills.

  • Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Coursework or professional experience related to international economics or policy.

  • Flexibility, motivation, and the ability to manage competing priorities.

Selection Process:

  1. Initial screening of submitted applications.

  2. Shortlisted candidates will complete two short essay questions.

  3. Final evaluations take place in December 2025.

  4. Fellowship start: Summer 2026 (or alternative agreed date).


Information Sessions

To support prospective applicants, the Treasury’s Junior Fellows recruiting committee will host three information sessions. These will feature current Junior Fellows sharing their experiences and insights.

Each session runs from 8:00–9:00 p.m. Eastern Time (U.S. & Canada).
