FOREST CITY, Iowa — Waldorf University is gearing up for its 13th annual Top of Iowa High School Creative Writing Contest, culminating in a Creative Writing Festival on October 30 at the university campus.
High school students from grades nine through twelve can submit poems, stories, and personal essays for a chance to win substantial scholarships. The contest recognizes two levels: 11th and 12th graders, and 9th and 10th graders, with renewable scholarships up to $20,000 for older students and $16,000 for younger ones.
The submission deadline is October 13, and students can submit up to two entries per category, with a 2,000-word limit for fiction and essays. Winning works may be published in the Waldorf Literary Review.
This year’s festival will feature talks on creative writing, publishing insights, and a reading by Samantha Edmonds, Waldorf’s Distinguished Visiting Writer.
The contest encourages participation from young writers across Iowa, Minnesota, and surrounding states.
