PUMA Steel hosted a SteelDays event in Cheyenne to celebrate the U.S. structural steel industry and showcase the next generation of welders.
More than 150 high school juniors and seniors from several states attended to make connections and watch live welding demonstrations from industry leaders.
Chase Metzler, a welding instructor at Laramie County Community College, said it was exciting to see so many students interested in skilled trades.
“It’s just exciting to see a lot of students come in and get the training they need to go out and help build America,” Metzler said. “America’s constantly building or rebuilding, it’s never-ending.”
As part of SteelDays, students competed in a high school welding contest where 40 scholarships were awarded. The higher a participant placed, the more scholarship money they received.
“Students are doing a lot of blueprint reading, fabrication, and weld placement,” Metzler explained. “Then welding inspectors go in and visually inspect all of the welds.”
Jerred Moore, one of the winners of the $5,000 top scholarship prize, noted he felt great once he got started and is excited for what comes next.
“When I laid my first bead, it just came together,” Moore said. “I think it’ll open a lot of opportunities for me and get me where I want to go.”
The event highlighted growing interest in skilled trades and the opportunities available in Wyoming’s manufacturing and construction industries.
