The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) at Stanford University is now accepting applications for the 2026–27 Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship on Contemporary Asia. This prestigious program supports junior scholars pursuing advanced research on contemporary political, economic, or social change in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as topics in international relations and international political economy.

Fellowship Overview

Each year, APARC offers two postdoctoral fellowships designed to foster innovative scholarship on Asia. Fellows receive:

  • $80,000 stipend for a 10-month appointment (pro-rated according to Stanford policy)
  • Up to $3,000 in research expenses
  • Full access to APARC resources, seminars, and publishing opportunities

The fellowship begins in Fall 2026 and requires full-time residency at Stanford for the academic year.

Research Areas of Focus

Applicants may specialize in:

  • Political, economic, or social transformation in Northeast, Southeast, or South Asia
  • International relations in the Asia-Pacific region
  • International political economy in Asia

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a PhD conferred within the last three years at the time of the fellowship start.
  • Dissertation submission and approval for conferral must be completed by June 30, 2026.
  • Certification of degree completion must be submitted by August 31, 2026.

Application Guidelines

The application process consists of:

  1. Online application form (available on the official Stanford APARC website)
  2. Upload the following documents in PDF format:
    • Curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Research statement (maximum 5 double-spaced pages) outlining the proposed fellowship project and intended publication outcome
  3. Three letters of recommendation emailed directly to shorensteinfellowships@stanford.edu (from the applicant, references, or a dossier service).

Deadline:

All applications must be submitted by December 1, 2025, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Applicants will receive confirmation once all materials, including recommendation letters, are received. Please note that Stanford University will be closed for winter break from December 22, 2025 – January 4, 2026, which may delay responses.
