Seven Kitimat students have received a combined $10,000 in scholarships this year through Rio Tinto’s BC Works sponsorship of the Kitimat Scholarship Association.
“We are proud to support local students through the Kitimat Scholarship Association,” Rio Tinto said in a statement. “We are excited to invest in our future leaders and congratulate all the award winners for their dedication and hard work.”
The Rio Tinto Proficiency Award of $1,000 was presented to Julia Brodie for achieving the highest overall grade average.
Four students each received a $1,500 Rio Tinto Scholarship for academic achievement in science, education, technology and business: Orrin Pierce, who plans to start a carpentry business; Adeen Shaikh, pursuing environmental engineering; Lucas Johnston, studying power engineering; and Maryam Shittu, who hopes to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
Two additional Technology Scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded to Cannon Thomas, who aims to become a Red Seal tradesperson, and Clarissa Price-Chin, who is entering an electrical apprenticeship.
“While family ties to BC Works are not a requirement, we are especially proud to celebrate the achievements of Rio Tinto family members Julia, Orrin, Cannon, and Clarissa,” the company added.
