Victoria – For Lucy Walters, studying Computer Science at UBC Okanagan, the pathway into the tech sector just got a bit easier, thanks to the $10,000 Women in Technology/Indigenous Women in Technology Scholarship she just received from the BC Scholarship Society.
“This scholarship will go a long way in supporting my education, and it means a great deal to me as a woman pursuing computer science,” said Walters. “I’m so grateful for the role your organization plays in creating a more inclusive future, and I’m excited to continue my journey in this field. This recognition truly motivates me, and I’m thankful to be part of a community that values inclusion and opportunity.”
Lucy is among 16 students who have been awarded the Women in Technology Scholarships this fall based on academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in computer/data science, engineering, or mathematics. The scholarships are funded from grants to the Society from the BC Government.
“B.C.’s tech sector is growing fast, and the future of tech innovation depends on diverse minds creating new solutions to tackle real-world challenges,” said Rick Glumac, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies. “Programs like the Women in Technology Scholarship are helping bring more voices to the table, and our government remains committed to supporting these efforts through initiatives like the Canadian Tech Talent Accelerator Program and research funding. Together we’re helping B.C. become a leading North American tech hub.”
Women are under-represented in post secondary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. In the 2023/24 academic year, 50% of students in the B.C. public post secondary system were women, while 40% of students in STEM programs were women. In 2023/24, only 25% of engineering credentials were awarded to women.
The tech sector in B.C. is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy generating about $35 billion in revenue, supporting more than 131,000 high-paying jobs. The province is home to more than 11,000 tech businesses. Labour market forecasts expect more than 74,000 tech-related job openings over the next decade for computer programmers, software designers, engineers, and others. Women represent only about a quarter of the tech workforce.
“These scholarships open doors for talented women to lead in technology and innovation. By supporting students like Lucy, we’re investing in a stronger, more inclusive future for B.C., one where diversity drives progress,” noted the Society’s Chair, Firas Abbasi.
