What the Program Offers
The AFS Global STEM Academies scholarship combines two major components:
1. A 12-week virtual curriculum
Students begin their journey at home through an interactive online course co-developed by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. The curriculum focuses on:
-
Sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
-
Climate and energy transition
-
Innovation and social impact leadership
-
Global competence and intercultural understanding
-
STEM-based problem solving and project work
The virtual phase concludes with a student-led social impact project, where participants design and present practical solutions to global challenges. These projects are themed around environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and community resilience.
2. A 4-week fully funded study abroad experience
After completing the online curriculum, scholars travel to one of four program destinations:
-
Brazil – Learn about biofuels, renewable energy innovation, and Indigenous environmental knowledge.
-
China – Explore robotics, 3D printing, sustainable mobility, and technology leadership across multiple cities.
-
Egypt – Combine STEM with arts and robotics while discovering ancient and modern innovation in Cairo.
-
India – Engage in hands-on robotics, sustainable mobility solutions, and cultural immersion across major innovation hubs.
During the in-person learning experience, students participate in STEM workshops, visit industry facilities, live with host families or supervised housing, and engage in cultural and community service activities.
Upon completion, participants earn the Advanced Certificate in Global Competence for Social Impact, jointly issued by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania.
