NUI Scholarly Publication Grants 2025: Empowering Academic Publishing Across Ireland

The National University of Ireland (NUI) has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Scholarly Publication Grants, offering financial support of up to €3,000 to help scholars publish their research. This initiative aims to promote high-quality academic work by current and retired NUI staff as well as early career academics (ECAs) across NUI member institutions.

Applications for the second 2025 call are due by 1 December 2025, with grants available for various types of scholarly publications, including books, journal articles, edited collections, and even audio-visual productions.

Supporting Academic Excellence

The NUI Grants toward Scholarly Publication were created to reduce financial barriers to academic publishing and to promote the dissemination of high-impact research. These grants are not intended to cover full publication costs but to contribute significantly toward them, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder academic progress.

Each year, approximately €20,000 is allocated to support selected applicants, with individual grants capped at €3,000. For journals hosted or edited within NUI institutions, smaller grants of up to €2,000 are also available.

A key objective of the scheme is to support early career academics, providing them with opportunities to publish and gain recognition in their fields. The NUI Senate gives priority to applications from emerging scholars who have completed their doctoral degrees within the past five years.

Who Is Eligible?

To apply for the NUI Scholarly Publication Grants, applicants must fall into one of the following categories at the time of application:

  1. NUI staff members, including full-time, part-time, and post-doctoral fellows.

  2. Retired staff members of NUI institutions.

  3. Early Career Academics (ECAs) who hold a doctoral degree from an NUI institution awarded within the last five years, even if they are not currently employed in higher education.

If a publication has multiple authors, at least one must meet the above criteria and have made a substantial contribution to the work.

The definition of “publication” is broad, encompassing:

  • Monographs and edited volumes

  • Peer-reviewed journal articles

  • Audio-visual productions such as documentaries, podcasts, and multimedia works

However, works already published before the time of application are ineligible.

What the Grant Covers

The grant is intended to cover publication-related expenses such as production costs, editing, and design. It will not fund:

  • Commercially viable publications

  • Research or travel expenses

  • Page charges for journal articles or reprints

  • Self-publication or non-peer-reviewed journals

  • Open access publication upgrades outside of justified exceptions

Applications that propose publication with reputable national or international publishers are favored.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit a comprehensive application package that includes:

  1. Completed Application Form

  2. Overview of the Publication, including a short summary, table of contents, and estimated length

  3. Two Peer Reviews commissioned by the publisher, confirming the scholarly quality of the work

  4. Publisher’s Statement, outlining publication commitment and detailed cost estimates

All materials must be submitted electronically via email to awards@nui.ie, with the subject line “Grants toward Scholarly Publication.” Files should be submitted as separate documents in a single compressed (zip) file not exceeding 20 MB.

The submission deadlines are 1 June and 1 December each year.

Selection and Evaluation

Applications are reviewed twice annually by the NUI Publications Committee, which makes recommendations to the NUI Senate. Selection is based on:

  • The academic merit of the work

  • The cost of publication and available funding

  • The applicant’s career stage and previous awards

  • The potential impact of the publication

The Committee may consult external experts for additional evaluation. All applicants, successful or otherwise, will be notified in writing of the outcome.

Successful applicants must acknowledge NUI support in their published work, and a copy of the publication must be submitted to NUI before payment is released.

Upholding Research Integrity

NUI maintains a strong commitment to ethical research and publication integrity. The University will not fund works that contravene Irish law or institutional research ethics policies. Applicants must declare any use of generative AI tools in the production of their work and comply with local institutional policies regarding their use.

By fostering transparent, ethical scholarship, the NUI ensures that its grants contribute to advancing credible and inclusive academic research.
