Programs: Research Equipment Program | Student Grant Program | Christopher Miller Outstanding Student Award
The National Geographic Conservation (NGC) is calling for applications for its Research Equipment and Student Grants 2025, designed to strengthen research capacity and promote scientific discovery across Latin America. These grants provide essential tools, resources, and funding to support innovative field projects that advance conservation and environmental knowledge in the American tropics.
The Research Equipment Program supports scientists and students by providing essential equipment that enables impactful fieldwork and research. Many promising researchers lack access to basic scientific tools — from microscopes and GPS units to binoculars, cameras, and textbooks. NGC’s program helps bridge this gap by donating or purchasing these items and delivering them directly to universities and conservation organizations across Latin America.
Researchers affiliated with a university or conservation organization in Latin America.
Applications are reviewed by the NGC Research Equipment Program Committee and external reviewers. Evaluations are based on:
NGC works closely with successful applicants to arrange cost-effective delivery—often through visiting representatives or collaborating colleagues.
Awardees are expected to provide an annual report on the use and impact of the equipment. The equipment remains with the research group to encourage future studies and professional growth.

The Student Grant Program (SGP) provides direct financial assistance to graduate students conducting field-based research in Latin America. Each award offers US$1,500 to cover essential research-related expenses such as transportation, lodging, meals, and consumable supplies.
M.S. or Ph.D. students from Latin America enrolled in a U.S. or South American university.
Applications are reviewed by the Student Grant Committee and external experts. Evaluation criteria include:
Awards are disbursed as a single payment of US$1,500, and recipients must provide a final report detailing project outcomes and use of funds.
Students who complete their project and reporting requirements may be eligible for additional funding in subsequent cycles.
The Christopher Miller Outstanding Student Award honors exceptional Student Grant recipients. Each year, one outstanding student is selected based on their final project report to receive an additional US$500 in recognition of excellence in conservation research and dedication to fieldwork.
Interested researchers and students can apply through the NGC official website. Applicants are encouraged to prepare strong proposals that clearly outline research goals, expected outcomes, and their contribution to conservation science in Latin America.
Gain access to essential research tools and field equipment.
Receive funding for fieldwork, travel, and basic research expenses.
Join a growing community of scientists and conservationists advancing sustainable development in the American tropics.
Build your research capacity and long-term professional network in conservation science.
The NGC supports conservation and environmental research through grants, field programs, and partnerships across Latin America. Its mission is to empower scientists, students, and institutions to conduct meaningful research that informs biodiversity protection and sustainable management of natural resources.
