A Nebraska kick returner was awarded a scholarship following his performance in the Huskers’ victory over Maryland on Saturday. Sophomore Kenneth Williams was awarded a scholarship by athletic director Troy Dannen in the locker room following the 34-31 win.
Williams had a career-high 85-yard kick return to the Maryland 10-yard line with 8:13 left in the second quarter. Nebraska scored a touchdown a few plays later to take a 17-14 lead.
Williams walked on at Nebraska after playing his senior season at Lincoln High School. He was also an outstanding track star, finishing third in the Class A 100-meter dash with a time of 10.52.
It’s fantastic to see a walk-on rewarded for their impactful play. Special teams have seen a vast improvement in 2025 under new coordinator Mike Ekeler, and players like Kenneth Williams are a vital piece to that puzzle.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-1) retake the field on Friday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The kickoff time is set for 7 p.m. CT and can be seen on Fox.
