The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) is inviting applications from highly qualified and motivated professionals for the role of Research Adviser. This is a pivotal position for individuals passionate about displacement research, disaster risk, global development, and evidence-based policymaking. IDMC plays a leading global role in monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on internal displacement, and this role gives you the opportunity to directly influence the quality and direction of socio-economic impact research carried out under EU INTPA initiatives.
The Research Adviser will be responsible for advancing and refining the methodologies used to assess the socio-economic impacts of displacement across various countries. This involves designing advanced analytical frameworks, ensuring the accuracy of displacement cost estimates, and providing technical oversight across a wide range of assessment activities. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to IDMC’s Global Insights Hub, a central platform for generating and sharing displacement-related knowledge to support international policies and humanitarian responses.
This is a fully remote position, open to candidates based in European countries where NRC maintains legal Employer of Record arrangements. Candidates must have the legal right to live and work in those countries. Preferred duty stations include Berlin, Brussels, London, or Oslo. In this role, you will:
Lead the design, testing, and continuous improvement of methodologies for socio-economic impact assessments.
Oversee data analysis, statistical estimations, ground-truthing of results, and validation of assumptions, particularly in EU INTPA priority countries.
Coordinate the work of consultants, peer reviewers, and research partners to ensure alignment with donor expectations and methodological standards.
Provide technical advice and support improvements to global displacement risk modelling frameworks.
Produce and quality-assure detailed country-specific displacement cost estimates and risk profiles.
Develop policy-friendly reports, technical briefs, and publications in collaboration with the Policy and Communications teams.
Identify additional data, tools, or expertise required to deliver project outputs and propose effective solutions.
Represent IDMC in high-level technical forums, workshops, donor events, and external knowledge-sharing platforms.
Ensure timely delivery of all assigned outputs under the EU INTPA project, maintaining high quality and accuracy.
Comply fully with NRC’s internal policies, operational guidelines, and safeguarding principles.
To be eligible, applicants must possess:
A Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in economics, development studies, disaster risk management, environmental studies, statistics, or a related discipline.
7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in socio-economic analysis, applied research, or policy assessments—especially in displacement, climate change, or disaster risk reduction.
A strong track record in developing research methodologies, conducting hypothesis testing, and interpreting complex model outputs.
Advanced quantitative and analytical skills, with proficiency in R, STATA, Python, or similar statistical tools.
Deep understanding of global risk assessment frameworks, displacement scenarios, and socio-economic modelling.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate consultants, peer reviewers, and multi-stakeholder research teams.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and handle competing priorities.
Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage.
Contract Type: 1-year contract, renewable based on performance and funding.
Workstation: Remote (Europe-based NRC representation locations).
Travel Requirement: 10–15%.
Salary: NRC Grade 8 (Resident salary scale).
