In the rapidly evolving landscape of global research, doctoral education has become a cornerstone for producing thought leaders, innovators, and transformative thinkers who can address complex societal challenges. The Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership (GU DTP) represents a premier initiative in this sphere, bringing together The Open University (OU), the University of Oxford, and Brunel University London to create an integrated, world-class doctoral training ecosystem. The partnership leverages the strengths of each institution, providing unparalleled research opportunities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and bespoke training for PhD students across a wide array of subject areas.
The Grand Union DTP is an ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) Doctoral Training Partnership, established to support high-caliber postgraduate researchers pursuing social science doctoral studies. It unites the research capabilities and training expertise of three leading institutions in the UK, offering students an exceptional environment to develop advanced knowledge, methodological expertise, and professional skills.
The DTP spans 23 subject pathways, grouped into five broad thematic clusters. These clusters are designed to provide structured yet flexible doctoral training, ensuring that students not only gain expertise in their chosen field but also acquire the interdisciplinary skills necessary to tackle complex, real-world problems.
The GU DTP builds upon the recognized research and doctoral training strengths of The Open University, the University of Oxford, and Brunel University. Each institution contributes unique assets to the partnership:
By combining these resources, the GU DTP delivers a doctoral experience that emphasizes excellence in research, applied skills, and professional readiness, enabling graduates to make a meaningful impact across academia, public policy, industry, and civil society.
The GU DTP provides varied award structures and durations, tailored to students’ prior training and research requirements. These awards cover full-time PhD study, including mandatory research placements and professional development components.
All awards account for full-time study, and part-time options are available. Importantly, ESRC funding is not available for students who have already started a Master’s or PhD; however, students midway through a Master’s can apply for ESRC funding for the PhD portion. The integration of Research in Practice placements and specialist training ensures that all students gain practical, professional experience alongside their academic research.
Holding a Grand Union DTP studentship offers significant advantages beyond financial support. Students gain access to:
These opportunities prepare students to produce rigorous, distinctive doctoral theses, and graduate with a comprehensive set of professional and transferable skills, enabling careers in both academic and non-academic settings.
The GU DTP emphasizes the cultivation of advanced research capabilities, interdisciplinary knowledge, and professional skills. Students are encouraged to engage in research that is methodologically sound, innovative, and socially impactful. They learn to:
Graduates leave the program with an exceptional skill set, including analytical rigor, project management, and the ability to navigate complex social, political, and technological landscapes.
Applying for a GU DTP studentship is a structured process designed to identify and support the strongest candidates. Prospective students are strongly advised to engage with potential supervisors and pathway leads at The Open University prior to submitting an application. Early engagement ensures guidance on proposal development and strengthens the overall application.
All awards are merit-based; the strongest applications are funded without consideration of institutional quotas.
Applicants must meet both OU admission requirements and the GU DTP eligibility criteria:
Applicants must also review the GU DTP funding page to ensure full compliance with specific eligibility requirements for ESRC studentships.
