
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme 2026—funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and managed by Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland—is now one of the most prestigious fully funded opportunities for master’s and doctoral researchers in Europe.
This competitive programme supports exceptional individuals across all disciplines, from arts and humanities to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with an average success rate of around 18% in recent years. Successful awardees are recognized as emerging leaders in their fields, driving world-class research and innovation.
Generous funding package worth up to €34,000 per year:
€25,000 annual stipend
Up to €5,750 per year for tuition fees (including non-EU fees)
€3,250 annually for research expenses
Non-EU students may request an additional €4,000 annually toward fees

Master’s by Research: Up to 2 years (or 1 year if already enrolled between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)
Doctoral Degree (PhD): Up to 4 years (or 3 years if already enrolled between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)
Deferrals may be allowed in cases of maternity, paternity, adoptive leave, parental leave, long-term illness, or carer’s leave with official approval.
Open to new entrants to Master’s or PhD programmes in Ireland
May also apply if already enrolled but within first year of study (registered between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)
No age limit
Must hold:
At least a first-class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s degree, or
If below that, a Master’s degree
Must be affiliated with an Eligible Research Body in Ireland (which verifies transcripts)
Must secure a primary academic supervisor (who can only endorse one applicant per call)
Cannot hold a permanent academic staff position at an Irish or international institution
Must not already hold a Master’s degree (if applying for a Master’s award) or a PhD (if applying for a doctoral award)
Category 1: EU/EEA/Switzerland/UK/Ukraine nationals who have resided in these areas for 3 of the past 5 years
Category 2: All other applicants (a limited number of awards available for exceptional candidates)
Indicative 2025 success rates:
STEM: 12% overall; 2% for Category 2
AHSS: 16% overall; 3% for Category 2

Applicants may apply to only one theme, but those not selected under a partner strand will be considered for the core scholarship.
Take the eligibility quiz (mandatory to access the application form).
Secure a primary supervisor at an eligible Irish research institution well before applying.
Prepare your application via the SmartSimple online system (opens 11 September 2025).
Submit your application by 23 October 2025 (16:00 Irish time). Applications must be submitted through the SmartSimple platform.
Ensure supervisor endorsement by 6 November 2025 and Research Office endorsement by 13 November 2025.

Applications undergo a two-stage international peer-review process:
Outer Board: At least two international reviewers assess and score proposals.
Inner Board: Additional reviewers evaluate shortlisted proposals and establish final rankings.
Evaluation weightings:
Applicant: 40% (academic track record, research potential, independent thinking)
Project: 40% (clarity, methods, feasibility, innovation, impact)
Training & Career Development: 10% (skills, career progression)
Environment: 10% (supervision quality, facilities, institutional support)
Tiebreakers are resolved in the order of Project → Applicant → Training & Career Development → Environment.
Gender-blind review: Do not include gender-identifying details in applications
Research integrity: Strict plagiarism checks apply
Open research & DORA principles: Emphasis on quality over journal impact factors, and encouragement of open access/data sharing
State Aid compliance: Projects with industry partners must meet EU “effective collaboration” rules
Intellectual property: Managed under Ireland’s National IP Protocol 2019
Other policies: Child protection, disability inclusion, data protection, research ethics
Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland is the national research and innovation funding agency, established on 1 August 2024 through the merger of the Irish Research Council (IRC) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). Yes. The programme is open to all nationalities. Most awards go to Category 1 applicants (EU/EEA/CH/UK/UA nationals with qualifying residency), but Category 2 exceptional candidates are funded each year.
Yes, if you registered between 1 Sep 2025 and 31 Aug 2026 (and meet other criteria). You may receive partial funding (1 year for Master’s; 3 years for PhD).
