Google Opens Applications for Software Engineering PhD Internship Program – Summer 2026

Google has announced its Software Engineering Internship program for PhD students, offering a comprehensive 12-14 week paid internship experience for Summer 2026. The program is designed for students in their penultimate academic year who are pursuing doctoral degrees in Computer Science or related technical fields

Application Details and Timeline

Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis, with Google encouraging early submissions for the best consideration. The application window remains open until February 27, 2026, though it may close earlier if all available projects reach capacity. Candidates who submit applications after the deadline or once positions are filled will not be considered.

The review process can take considerable time, with responses potentially taking upwards of 90 days. Google advises that if applicants haven’t heard back within three months, they have likely proceeded with other candidates for that particular role, though recruiters may still reach out for different opportunities that match candidates’ skills and interests.

Program Requirements and Locations

Participation requires candidates to be located in the United States throughout the entire internship duration. The program offers positions across multiple major cities, including Mountain View and Atlanta as primary locations, plus 28 additional cities across North America.

Available locations span the country from coast to coast, including major tech hubs like San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Austin, Boston (Cambridge), and many others. Candidates can indicate their preferred working location during the application process.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or related technical field
  • Programming experience in C, C++, Java, or Python

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a US degree program with availability for full-time work for 12 weeks outside university terms
  • Penultimate academic year status or ability to return to degree program after internship completion
  • Research experience in key areas including Algorithms, Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, Compilers, Database systems, Data Mining, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning, Networking, or Systems
  • Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, and software design

Program Structure and Opportunities

The internship provides both Software Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering tracks. Software Engineering interns work on specific projects critical to Google’s operations, focusing on complex computer science solutions and scalable distributed software systems. They engage in designing, testing, deploying, and maintaining software solutions while contributing to smaller projects with broad appeal.

Site Reliability Engineering interns concentrate on maintaining and scaling existing systems, working on code-level troubleshooting, service maintenance, monitoring systems, and building automation infrastructure to ensure reliable performance at massive scale.

The program includes professional development opportunities, an executive speaker series, and community-building activities designed to provide comprehensive career preparation beyond technical work.

Compensation and Benefits

The internship offers competitive compensation with a base salary range of $113,000 to $150,000 for the full-time position. Google determines final compensation based on role level, location, and individual factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education. The posted range reflects base salary only and doesn’t include additional benefits, bonuses, or equity compensation.

Application Process

Applicants need to submit an updated CV or resume and current transcripts in English. The resume must include the anticipated graduation date in MM/YY format. Transcripts should be uploaded in the Education Section with “Now attending” selected as the degree status. Google prefers PDF formats for all submitted documents.

The company emphasizes its commitment to fair hiring practices, particularly noting compliance with Fair Chance Ordinances in Los Angeles County and San Francisco for qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records.

This internship represents an opportunity to work at one of the world’s leading technology companies, contributing to projects that impact billions of users while gaining valuable experience in cutting-edge computer science applications and large-scale system development.
