The Intelligent Photonics for Security, Reliability, Sustainability and Safety (iPSRS) programme is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) funded by the European Commission for the period 2024–2030. Building on the strong legacy of the former EMJMD Photonics for Security, Reliability and Safety (PSRS), iPSRS integrates photonics and artificial intelligence (AI) to address emerging scientific, industrial, and societal challenges.
Coordinated by Université Jean Monnet (UJM), Saint-Étienne, the programme is jointly delivered with:
University of Eastern Finland (UEF)
Vilnius University (VU), Lithuania
Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), France
The consortium includes a broad network of academic and industrial partners, ensuring a rich, multidisciplinary learning environment.
iPSRS provides world-class training in the rapidly advancing field of intelligent photonics, combining:
Light-based and wave-based technologies
Data-driven systems
Machine learning and AI for complex data processing
The curriculum includes fundamental and applied courses, project-based learning, seminars, and extended internships. Students gain:
A strong theoretical foundation
Hands-on experience in state-of-the-art research labs
Direct exposure to industrial environments
Networking opportunities with top researchers, engineers, and industry partners
The programme prepares graduates for high-impact careers in sectors such as security, imaging, sensing, sustainability technologies, communications, and advanced manufacturing.
Between September 2024 and September 2030, the iPSRS programme will award 80 Erasmus Mundus scholarships to outstanding applicants worldwide.
Each scholarship provides:
€1,400 per month
(to support living costs, travel, and participation across partner universities)
The programme welcomes applications from highly motivated students with strong backgrounds in:
Physics
Photonics
Engineering
Computer science
Applied mathematics
Or related fields
International candidates from all regions are encouraged to apply.
Students benefit from:
Multinational academic mobility across partner universities
Access to advanced research facilities
Industrial workshops with iPSRS partner companies
A dynamic multicultural student community
Opportunities for internships, master theses, and PhD pathways
Presentation video by students of the 2023–2025 cohort
