Research shows that Black Canadians remain significantly underrepresented in civic leadership roles, including senior public service, elected office, and gateway professions such as law, public policy, and business. The 1834 Foundation was created to reverse this trend and develop a new generation of Black civic and international leaders.
Programs
1834 Fellowship
Named in honor of the year slavery was abolished in the British Empire, the 1834 Fellowship supports 20 high-potential Black youth annually who aspire to civic leadership. Fellows receive mentorship, skills development, and career guidance to increase their capacity for leadership roles.

Fellows gain skills to shape global systems impacting Black communities in Canada and worldwide, preparing them for careers as diplomats, policy analysts, and global change-makers.
Offered in collaboration with the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto.
1834 Debates
Part of Operation Black Vote Canada’s 1834 initiatives, the 1834 Youth Debates empower Black students to become local and global leaders. This program is in partnership with University of Toronto Schools (UTS).
