Students apply each year through the CFUW Orillia Education Foundation, the charitable arm of CFUW Orillia, with scholarships awarded based on the students’ academic achievement, school and community involvement and financial need. The applications are thoroughly reviewed by a committee of dedicated CFUW Orillia Education Foundation members.
This year, the foundation was able to give a scholarship of $2,500 to a deserving  student thanks to the generosity of the Farwell family, and friends and colleagues.
“Nan Farwell was a long-standing and dedicated member of CFUW Orillia. She was a graduate of Queen’s University and taught physical education and other subjects with the Peel Board of Education,” explains CFUW Orillia Education Foundation board president Roline Maconachie. “She took specific interest in raising funds for scholarships to ensure that young women be given opportunities for education, which makes this scholarship opportunity all the more special. We are proud to offer this unique scholarship opportunity to Charlie Wiseman from Orillia Secondary School in memory of Nan and her contributions to our community.”
The Nan Farwell Scholarship will be awarded yearly over the next five years.
Another special scholarship, in conjunction with Lakehead University, and in honour of CFUW Orillia’s 70th anniversary, has been awarded to a graduate student attending Lakehead University in Orillia. This scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded every year for five years.
