Carter Center internships are a paid opportunity. Fall and spring sessions are 15 weeks long with a stipend of $5,100; our summer session is 10 weeks long with a stipend of $3,400. Interns work 20 hours per week.
There are no citizenship requirements for interns. However, all applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. International students enrolled in U.S.-based colleges or universities are eligible with approval from your host institution.

Internships are available through a number of programs and offices within three broad areas of The Carter Center.
The Carter Center’s peace initiatives work to promote human rights, resolve conflicts, and support democratic governance around the world. Interns placed in peace programs may support research, program development, data analysis, and event coordination in one of the following departments:
China Focus: Examines U.S.-China relations and supports understanding through research and dialogue.
Conflict Resolution Program: Works on mediation, negotiation, and peacebuilding efforts.
Democracy Program: Assists with election observation and democratic institution strengthening.
Human Rights Program: Supports advocacy and programming to advance global human rights.
Inform Women, Transform Lives: Promotes women’s access to public information and civic participation.
Latin America and the Caribbean Focus: Engages with political and social challenges in the region.
Office of the Vice President of Peace Programs: Provides strategic insight and executive-level support.
Rule of Law Program: Strengthens access to justice and legal frameworks in transitional societies.
The Carter Center’s health division is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in disease eradication and mental health advocacy. Health interns contribute to life-changing programs that address medical, logistical, and policy challenges, including:
International Public Health: Focuses on combating diseases such as Guinea worm disease, river blindness, and trachoma.
Mental Health Program: Engages in policy reform and advocacy, especially within the U.S. context.
Special Health Projects: Supports cross-cutting health initiatives and innovation in public health outreach.
Behind every successful mission lies an effective support system. Interns in the operational departments of the Carter Center play a crucial role in ensuring smooth implementation of programs. These placements are ideal for students interested in nonprofit management, communications, human resources, or technology. Areas include:
Communications: Involves public relations, social media, content development, and press support.
Development: Assists in donor outreach, fundraising campaigns, and proposal development.
Educational Programs: Supports internship coordination, educational outreach, and event planning.
Human Resources (People Operations & Programs): Helps manage hiring, intern onboarding, and organizational development.
Information Technology: Provides tech support, system maintenance, and innovation solutions.
Strategy, Innovation and Learning: Focuses on organizational effectiveness and impact measurement.
Volunteer Services/Art Collection: Manages volunteers and maintains the Center’s unique art collection.
To be considered for the Fall 2025 Internship Program:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program.
International students must be enrolled in U.S.-based institutions and eligible to work in the U.S. with CPT, OPT, or similar status.
A strong academic record (GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred).
Demonstrated interest in international affairs, public service, nonprofit work, or human rights.
Willingness to commit to 20 hours per week for the duration of the internship.

In order to access the application, you will be asked to create a user account in Embark (if you do not have one already). You will be prompted to enter a user name and password and provide a valid email address.
This will give you the option to save and continue your application at a later date, as well as the ability to check the status of your recommendations or transcripts after you have submitted your application. Please be aware that once you click submit, you will not be able to make any changes to your application. After submitting your application, make sure you receive a confirmation email verifying that your application has been successfully submitted.
Before you begin, The Carter Center strongly encourages you to review a sample blank application (PDF).
Please be prepared to provide the following required components:
-Contact information
-Two short essays (350 words each)
-A resume (PDF)
-A short, pertinent writing sample, preferably an academic paper five pages or less (PDF)
-Two (2) recommendations. Be prepared to provide the names and email addresses of two references. They will be sent a system-generated email asking them to upload a confidential recommendation letter directly to our system. Please ask your references to check their spam/junk folder if they have not received the email. Letters of recommendation are due within one week of the application deadline.
-Official transcripts may be mailed in a sealed envelope to the address below and postmarked by the application deadline. Many universities also offer secure, official, electronic copies of transcripts. Transcripts submitted in this way should be emailed to EducationalPrograms@cartercenter.org.
