The 29th Annual Belmont Mountaineer Athletic Conference Tournament successfully raised funds for scholarships benefiting local West Virginia University athletes on Thursday.
The event featured 22 teams competing in two divisions: open and corporate.
Recent scholarship recipients include Alyssa DeSantis, a former Steubenville Catholic gymnast; Chase Harler, who played men's basketball at Wheeling Central; and Ian Bush, a current WVU wrestling team member from Cameron.
"It definitely meant a lot, especially what the scholarship means. It's for kids from the Ohio Valley" Harler said. "I took a lot of pride being from Moundsville, and the Ohio Valley, and to represent the state. It definitely meant a lot to me."
Winning teams at the tournament received $500, while golfers had the opportunity to win $1,000 in the Belmont Savings Bank Red Hot Chili Pepper Putting Contest. In the Open Division, the team of Dan Rine, Jim Wade, Darron Potts and Zander Potts won first. In the Corporate Division, McKenzie Riedel and Zac Riedel were first. The winner of the putting contest was Bob Joseph with a hole in one.
