Apply Now: Traineeship in Artificial Intelligence at the European Court of Auditors

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has announced an exciting opportunity for recent university graduates and doctoral students to join its Traineeship Programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Based in Luxembourg, this program offers participants the chance to contribute to the digital transformation of one of the European Union’s most vital institutions while gaining hands-on experience in AI and data-driven auditing.

Applications are open until 30 November 2025 (midnight, Luxembourg time).

About the European Court of Auditors

Established in 1975, the ECA serves as the European Union’s external auditor, ensuring that EU funds are properly managed and that its programs deliver value to citizens. The institution operates as a collegiate body of 27 Members, representing each EU member state, and employs around 1,000 professionals in audit, administrative, and technical roles.

The ECA’s mission extends beyond financial oversight—it strives to enhance accountability, transparency, and sound management across EU institutions. By assessing policies, identifying risks, and recommending improvements, the ECA contributes to better governance and more effective public spending across Europe.

As a forward-looking institution, the ECA is investing in AI, data science, and digital transformation to modernize its auditing processes. This traineeship is part of that effort—offering young professionals a unique opportunity to apply AI to real-world public sector challenges.

What the Traineeship Offers

The AI Traineeship Programme provides participants with a six-month paid placement at the ECA, with the possibility of a six-month extension. Successful applicants will receive a monthly allowance of €2,500 and work under the supervision of experienced ECA staff.

The trainees will collaborate with experts from the DATA Team (responsible for IT audit, data science, and robotic process automation) and the Directorate for Information Technology, Workplace, and Innovation. Together, they will explore how AI can improve auditing, enhance data accuracy, and streamline operations across EU institutions.

Trainees will gain hands-on experience through tasks such as:

  • Using AI to analyze large datasets and extract key information.

  • Building chatbots and interactive tools using institutional data.

  • Testing and benchmarking AI models for performance and accuracy.

  • Applying AI to detect anomalies in financial data or automate document processing.

  • Conducting research on AI ethics, best practices, and emerging frameworks.

By the end of the program, participants will have developed both technical expertise and policy insight, preparing them for impactful careers in data science, AI governance, and digital innovation within or beyond EU institutions.

  • Have a C1 level of English (or equivalent) and a good command of another official EU language.

  • Have no prior traineeship or employment at any EU institution, body, or agency.

The ECA seeks candidates who demonstrate both technical competence and soft skills. Applicants should be able to synthesize complex information, communicate effectively with non-technical audiences, and work collaboratively in an international environment.

Desirable AI-related skills include:

  • Understanding of generative AI and its real-world applications.

  • Familiarity with tools such as ChatGPT, MS Copilot, or open-source AI frameworks.
