The Bloomberg American Health Initiative Fellowship is now accepting applications for the 2026 academic year—offering one of the most transformative opportunities for individuals passionate about improving public health across the United States. Whether you are a farmer, educator, lawyer, nonprofit leader, police officer, or public servant, this fellowship was created for people working on the frontlines of change.

The fellowship provides a fully funded Master of Public Health (MPH) or Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the top-ranked public health school in the world. More than just a scholarship, the program is a launchpad for dedicated professionals who want to make a measurable difference in their communities.

The deadline to apply is December 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

About the Bloomberg American Health Initiative

The Bloomberg Fellows Program, part of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, was established to empower individuals and organizations addressing the most urgent health challenges in the United States. The fellowship is rooted in the belief that real change requires equipping passionate community leaders with the scientific knowledge and evidence-based tools of public health.

Since its founding, the program has supported over 400 fellows who are driving impact in fields such as adolescent health, addiction and overdose prevention, food systems, environmental health, and violence reduction. Fellows join a lifelong network of changemakers committed to improving health equity and well-being across the country.

Program Overview

Selected fellows receive a full scholarship to pursue an MPH or DrPH degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In addition to tuition coverage, fellows gain access to mentorship, training, and a national peer network of public health innovators.

Fellows’ work extends far beyond the classroom. They are expected to collaborate with a partner organization—often their current employer or a community-based institution—to apply their training to real-world problems. This collaboration ensures that each fellow’s education has immediate and lasting local impact.

Application Process

The Bloomberg Fellows application is a two-step process:

  1. Apply for Admission:
Candidates must apply to either the MPH or DrPH program through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) by December 1, 2025. Applications must include transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation.

  2. Submit Fellowship Forms:
Applicants must complete the Fellowship Applicant Form, and their collaborating organization must submit the Collaborating Organization Form through InfoReady by the same deadline.

Each applicant may apply to only one degree program (MPH or DrPH) per cycle. Those admitted to both programs will not be considered for the fellowship.

Important Details and Eligibility

  • Deadline: December 1, 2025 (11:59 PM EST)

  • Start Dates: MPH fellows begin in June 2026; DrPH fellows in August 2026

  • Reference Letter: One required

  • Enrollment Options: Applicants must select either part-time or full-time study for the MPH program

  • Eligibility: U.S.-based professionals actively working in sectors that influence public health outcomes

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their materials early to avoid last-minute technical issues. Late submissions or direct email applications will not be accepted.

Commitment and Agreement

The fellowship operates as a grant that converts to a loan if program conditions are not fulfilled. Fellows sign an Agreement outlining repayment terms should they fail to meet their commitment to public health service following graduation. This structure reinforces the program’s focus on accountability and long-term community impact.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Bloomberg School of Public Health is deeply committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The fellowship seeks candidates from a wide range of professional, educational, and cultural backgrounds, including those from organizations with limited formal public health expertise. This diversity strengthens the program’s reach and relevance across different U.S. communities.
