The UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Programme offers a unique opportunity for qualified scholars to spend 2–3 months in Helsinki, Finland conducting research, engaging with experts, and contributing to UNU-WIDER’s mission of delivering high-quality, policy-relevant economic research.
This highly competitive programme is designed for scholars who wish to deepen their expertise, collaborate with international researchers, and publish impactful work on pressing development challenges.
Visiting scholars at UNU-WIDER typically spend a 2–3 month sabbatical at the institute. During their stay, they:
Conduct research on development and global economic issues.
Prepare one or more papers for possible publication in the WIDER Working Paper Series.
Present a seminar to share findings and engage with UNU-WIDER researchers.
Participate in UNU-WIDER activities and networking opportunities.
This is a unique chance to work at the intersection of academic research and policy, contributing to cutting-edge knowledge that informs global development.
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
Hold a PhD degree in economics or a development-related discipline.
Have a strong research background; a good publication record is an added advantage.
Demonstrate strong interest in UNU-WIDER’s research programme. While preference is given to aligned research topics, applications on all aspects of development are welcome.
Be fluent in oral and written English.
Diversity and inclusion matter: Early-career researchers, female scholars, and applicants from developing countries are especially encouraged to apply.
UNU-WIDER provides competitive financial support to make participation possible:
A monthly stipend of EUR 3,330 to contribute towards travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
Medical insurance covering sickness and accident during the stay.
A supplementary travel grant (if required) for high travel costs exceeding EUR 1,200, provided the ticket is paid by the scholar and not covered by another grant.
Note: The programme does not cover expenses or provide services for dependents.
Applications for the Visiting Scholars Programme are accepted once per year.

Notification: Selected applicants will be informed by email within eight weeks of the deadline.
Confirmation: Accepted candidates must confirm their participation within two weeks of receiving the offer.
