November’s deadly fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Hong Kong has prompted public outrage unseen in the city since Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law in 2020. Surviving residents recount a series of missed opportunities to prevent what’s become one of the city’s deadliest blazes in decades, including ignored warnings from more than a year ago about the flammability of the foam boards used to cover people’s windows.
The outrage now threatens to rekindle dissent the Chinese Communist Party has devoted the past six years to eradicating, with Hong Kong leaders under pressure to deliver justice while also preventing the kind of mass street protests that erupted back in 2019.
