The Government of Nigeria, through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (SWAp Coordination Office) under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 National Health Fellows Programme — a prestigious initiative aimed at empowering young Nigerians to become the next generation of public health leaders and innovators.

This competitive fellowship targets exceptional young professionals passionate about strengthening Nigeria’s health system through leadership, research, and innovation. It provides an unparalleled opportunity for experiential learning, capacity building, and professional growth in the public health sector.

The application deadline is November 30, 2025, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.


About the National Health Fellows Programme

The National Health Fellows Programme was established to cultivate a dynamic and competent health workforce capable of driving Nigeria’s healthcare reform and improving health outcomes nationwide. The fellowship blends leadership training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, preparing participants to tackle pressing challenges in healthcare delivery, policy, and innovation.

The programme’s primary objectives include:

  • Developing skilled public health leaders equipped to design and implement impactful interventions.

  • Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare systems.

  • Strengthening local health capacity through practical, community-focused projects.

  • Fostering collaboration between the government, development partners, and youth professionals.

Fellows will gain exposure to high-level policy engagement, health systems research, and leadership in action through both national and subnational placements.


Who Can Apply

The fellowship is open to Nigerian citizens aged 25 to 35 years who are passionate about driving change in the country’s health system. Eligible applicants must:

  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline, Information Technology, or the Social Sciences.

  • Demonstrate interest or prior experience in public health, community healthcare, innovation, or non-profit development work.

  • Be available for full-time participation during the fellowship period.

  • Be an indigene of the state they are applying from.

  • Possess a smartphone with internet access for digital learning and communication.

  • Provide a recommendation letter from one of the following:

    • A university dean,

    • NYSC supervisor, or

    • A recognized community leader or organization.

Applicants must also demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership potential and a commitment to public service.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • A creative and entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Passion for primary healthcare, health equity, and community engagement.

Selection Process

The selection process is merit-based and competitive. It includes three main stages:

  1. Online Application Submission – Applicants fill out the official application form and upload all necessary documents.

  2. Screening and Interviews – Shortlisted candidates participate in virtual or physical interviews.

  3. Final Selection and Onboarding – Successful candidates receive an official offer and join the fellowship cohort.
