About the Dalai Lama Fellows Program

Founded on the principles of compassion, ethical leadership, and interconnectedness, Dalai Lama Fellows is an initiative designed to cultivate leaders who are both mindful and socially conscious.

Our approach is rooted in the Head, Heart, and Hands model — a framework that integrates intellectual understanding, emotional awareness, and practical application. Fellows learn not only what to do as social innovators, but also how to be in alignment with the values of empathy, respect, and wisdom.

Over the course of one year, Fellows engage in:

  • An immersive online curriculum exploring contemplative leadership, ethical decision-making, and systems thinking.
  • Personal coaching sessions to deepen self-awareness and clarity of purpose.
  • Global peer learning circles that connect changemakers across cultures and disciplines.
  • A transformative in-person assembly that builds lifelong bonds of friendship, collaboration, and shared vision.

Upon completion, Fellows become part of the LifeLong Fellows Community — an ever-growing network of alumni who continue to support one another’s personal and professional journeys.

Eligibility Criteria

The Dalai Lama Fellows program seeks individuals who are deeply committed to inner transformation and social action. To apply for the 2026 cohort, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be between 20 and 36 years old as of April 1, 2026.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in both spoken and written English is required.
  • Project Engagement: Applicants must currently be working on, or have well-defined plans to launch, a social change project that will be sustained throughout the Fellowship year.
    • While preference is given to those already leading ongoing initiatives, applicants with a clear, feasible project plan and community ties are also encouraged to apply.
  • Community Knowledge: Applicants should demonstrate at least one year of prior engagement with the community or issue their project addresses.
  • Commitment: Fellows must dedicate approximately 12 hours per month to Fellowship activities (excluding project work).
  • Assembly Attendance: Fellows must be available to attend the 5-day Contemplative Leadership Assembly in May 2026. All travel, lodging, and meal expenses will be fully covered by DLF.
  • Contemplative Interest: A willingness to engage in mindfulness and reflective practices as a core part of leadership development.

The Fellowship welcomes applicants from all countries, faiths, and backgrounds. It is a non-sectarian program that celebrates diversity and encourages participants to draw wisdom from their own cultural and spiritual traditions.

Selection Process

The Dalai Lama Fellows selection process is designed to identify individuals who demonstrate alignment between their personal growth goals and the Fellowship’s mission.

When evaluating candidates, we look for:

  • Authenticity of purpose — a genuine desire to grow as a compassionate leader.
  • Self-awareness and emotional intelligence — openness to learning from others and reflecting inwardly.
  • Deep community connection — understanding the challenges and strengths of the community they serve.
  • Social innovation potential — a clear, feasible, and ethically grounded project addressing real-world issues.
  • Commitment to contemplative leadership — interest in mindfulness, compassion, and personal transformation.

Unlike many fellowships that prioritize measurable impact and scale, Dalai Lama Fellows emphasizes transformation — both personal and collective. We believe that genuine social change begins within the individual and expands outward through relationships, communities, and systems.

Areas of Focus

Fellows work on Compassion-in-Action Projects that address pressing global challenges. These projects often align with the following areas:

  • Health and Well-being
  • Education and Youth Empowerment
  • Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action
  • Gender Equity and Human Rights
  • Cultural Understanding and Inclusion
  • Economic Opportunity and Community Development

Regardless of the field, the unifying thread among all Fellows is a commitment to ethical, compassionate leadership that seeks long-term, sustainable solutions.

Examples of Past Fellows and Their Projects

To illustrate the diversity and impact of Dalai Lama Fellows’ work, here are a few examples of remarkable initiatives led by past Fellows:

  • Stephen Ogweno (Kenya) – Founder of Stowelink, a youth-led organization addressing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and gender-based violence through art, technology, and education. Stowelink’s mobile app NCD 365 provides health resources, prevention tools, and peer support networks.
  • Bhagya Wijayawardane (Sri Lanka) – Creator of Anybody Can Grow, a community-based initiative promoting food equity and sustainable agriculture. The project provides urban garden spaces and educational programs to foster food security and environmental awareness.
  • Roseline Adewuyi (Nigeria) – Founder of STEMFILLES, an empowerment program that trains young girls in STEM education and works to dismantle gender stereotypes in science and technology fields.
  • Abinash Mohanty (India) – Developer of Project Anwesha, which helps the Tanga horse-cart community in Bihar turn animal waste into biogas, providing renewable electricity to their homes while preserving cultural heritage.

These examples reflect the creativity, compassion, and courage that Dalai Lama Fellows bring to communities across the world.

Support and Resources

While Dalai Lama Fellows does not provide direct funding for Fellows’ projects, the program offers rich non-financial support that many participants describe as life-changing.

Fellows receive:

  • Personalized one-on-one coaching from experienced mentors.
  • Access to a global network of changemakers, alumni, and thought leaders.
  • An interactive online learning platform for ongoing reflection and collaboration.
  • Guidance on identifying project funding and partnerships.
  • Full financial support for the Contemplative Leadership Assembly (travel, lodging, meals).

Through these resources, Fellows gain the tools, mindset, and relationships needed to sustain both their personal growth and project impact long after the Fellowship year ends.

Commitment and Expectations

The Dalai Lama Fellowship is a serious commitment — one that invites participants to integrate compassion into their daily lives and leadership practices.

Fellows are expected to dedicate:

  • Around 12 hours per month for learning, reflection, and coaching.
  • Additional time for their Compassion-in-Action Project implementation.
  • Daily or regular contemplative practice, such as meditation, journaling, or mindful walks.

Participation includes:

  • Monthly one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • Monthly large-group learning calls.
  • Quarterly small group meetings for peer support.
  • Continuous engagement on the DLF learning platform.

Through this rhythm, Fellows experience a holistic journey of inner awareness, meaningful relationships, and real-world leadership application.

Curriculum Overview: The Head, Heart, and Hands Model

The Head, Heart, and Hands framework lies at the core of the DLF curriculum. It integrates three key dimensions of leadership:

1. Connection to Self (Head)

Fellows explore self-awareness, emotional resilience, and ethical reflection. They learn to recognize their internal motivations and cultivate clarity in purpose and decision-making.

2. Connection to Others (Heart)

Fellows deepen empathy and develop the ability to communicate compassionately across differences. They learn to build trust, resolve conflict, and foster inclusive collaboration.

3. Connection to Ecosystems (Hands)

Fellows engage with the larger systems — social, environmental, and cultural — that shape their work. They gain insight into systems thinking and practice sustainable action within interconnected global contexts.

This multidimensional approach ensures that Fellows grow not only as project leaders but as compassionate human beings capable of transforming systems from the inside out.
