Fried pickles helped a Richmond Hill teen pursue his passion for hospitality and restaurant tourism at Savannah Technical College.
The 5 Spot restaurants, part of the GLGSAV family, announced the launch of Serving Success this year, an employee scholarship initiative that aims to support educational and career advancement in hospitality and related industries.
In its inaugural year, The 5 Spot restaurants raised $2,000 for Jordin Watkins’ scholarship by donating $1 from every fried pickle appetizer sold.
Watkins, an 18-year-old college freshman, began working at The 5 Spot when it first opened in January 2024, later getting promoted to a host.
He applied for the scholarship around the time he applied to Savannah Technical College, nervously anticipating the fate of both applications, he said. Months later, Watkins said his manager received an email that he won the Serving Success scholarship and told him the good news.
“I was really excited about it because it was a while of not hearing back, and out of nowhere, I got it,” he said.
The scholarship has allowed Watkins to cut back on hosting hours at The 5 Spot and devote more time to his studies. He said the funds are going towards tuition for the year and textbooks.
Watkins’ future goals of opening his own restaurant stands firm, he said, and he is looking forward to seeing more high school-aged students apply for the scholarship next year. Eligible employees may apply for awards ranging from $250 to $2,000.
“Working at The 5 Spot has given me a sense of family and a passion for the hospitality industry,” Watkins said in a press release. “The support I’ve received here — and now this scholarship — makes me want to give back by creating restaurants where people feel welcome, valued, and excited to return.”
The program was created to invest in the growth of GLGSAV employees who show dedication, leadership potential and a commitment to hospitality. The scholarship may be used for tuition, books, supplies, housing and other education-related expenses.
